We recently went out to eat and it’s not the first time this has happened. To a certain degree it should not be of my interest, however it frightens me on the one hand of where we are heading as a society in our ever connected worlds while at the same time makes me sad that it has come so far. You ask what a I speak of? Every hear of the term Nomophobia? No, well here a quick explanation – its the pathological fear of remaining out of touch with technology and is a relatively modern affliction (duh!).We sat there in the restaurant and were discussing the world away, while on the first occasion the couple in front of us were both on their phones facebooking, reading their twitter feeds and this for nearly 15min. The only time they spoke to each other was when the waiter came to take their order. The “best” part was they put their phones down for nearly a minute when the food was being served but “he” was then immediately back and scrolling with one finger through something while she was watching a video. I mean, honestly, I love technology. It fascinates me just like most others however technology has come to consume everything and everyone.

We need to get back to basics! We need to be able to put aside our anxiousness of wanting to grab our phone every minute because of our phobia of losing touch with the real world which we are in anyhow. Connect with it offline! Learn to speak, and if you ever speak with me you better not be fiddling with your phone, tablet or any other device.

So when I think about his couple and two other couples we have come across over the past few weeks within nearly the same scenario, I come to ask myself how our behaviors have to change. All those emoticons, apps, and what not. Have smart phones and the ability to be connected at all time become an automatic extension to human behavior or are we victims of a fast-paced, consumer oriented society? To be honest, it is a bit of both.

Our connections

All our likes, and comments, and retweets and shares contribute to our ego, no? I seriously hope not. Its human nature to want to belong, to want to be ahead, to want to be part of that small social circle that perhaps in reality may not be, yet I plead with humanity to not lose common sense, to not lose human touch, to challenge themselves to look at their individual behaviors and understand that there needs to not be any fear when your not connected. The world moves right on without you knowing the latest crap or liking the latest photo some individual 1000km away just posted. The world turns just fine right where you are. Live in it. Live in the moment and soak in your surroundings.

How?

Start by resisting the urge to constantly check your phone. Try limiting your number of mobil social media networks. Join a sports club or join a professional networking group. Set aside time to leave your phone alone and do something else. Read a book, swing a couple golf balls, walk the dogs or go for a run. There are also plenty of apps that help you do that. They automatically lock up your screen for a set time. Another useless idea because we humans are incapable of executing common sense. Nonetheless if this helps you, give it a shot.

If you think it to honestly is an addiction, then tell someone. Im sure real friends and family will intervene and tell you their thoughts. Take it step by step but for goodness sake, but please dont go out with someone, especially your significant other and then sit, not talk about all the world has to offer and just browse your mobile device.

Lets get back it nature!
