We get so caught up in day to day hassles that we forget the important things in life. I recently read a good article by a friend around simplification. How we get so caught up with so many things that we become slaves to them and often create a feeling of guilt when we are not doing what we think we ought to do. That made me ponder about a few things I’ve come to learn. Here are a few of my “rules”:1. Unplug

Put away your notebook, tablet, iPhone, Galaxy, Playstation and go outside. Go into the woods and look at a leaf. Soak in some nature and sun (a good source of vitamin D) and leave city hassle behind.

2. Use Your Manners

It continues to fascinate me how many people do not have manners. You cant go wrong with saying “please” and “thank you”, “pardon me” or excuse me”. The more I exhibit good manners, the more good fortune seems to come my way. Give it a shot, especially those folks early in the train.

3. Stay True To Yourself

Everyone is trying to be like someone else, do something like someone or act like someone else simply because of some illogical reasoning that they too will then move down the road of luck and be successful. Be yourself, be happy and let others deal with who you really are. This will show who actually cares and who gives a sh*t.

4. Do What You Love

I preach this over and over again. People often ask me why I continue to do so many things including projects regardless of my nature of success and all the other good things going on. I often tell them this: Figure out what you love to do, and then find a way to get paid to do it. You are going to be much happier being paid a little bit to do something you love, because you are living in joy, then you will getting paid a great deal to do something you hate. You may end up driving a kick-a** Range Rover, but you’ll kick yourself in the a** the entire way.

5. Grind It Out

Hard work should be considered a privilege. If you don’t like working hard, it means you’re not doing the right work. We have a certain amount of time on this planet. We weren’t put here to sit around playing Angry Birds and eating ice cream all day. That’s what you do at the end of a good, hard session of putting your shoulder to the wheel. I love this quote by the Kentucky author Wendell Berry: He says, ‘It’s sad that we live in a society that has the refrain ‘thank God it’s Friday,’ because that means you despise 5/7ths of your life.’ And there’s a good chance you spend the other 2 days drinking, so you don’t have to think about work. Boiled down, the advice therein is: Try to fill your days with things that you love to do, and that includes not only work, but your family and your friends.

6. Count Your Lucky Stars
The reason I mind my manners is because I know I’m a lucky son of a b****. I know that I’m not doing well because I’m so terrific. I’m smart enough to recognize that I’ve been given some good fortune and I’ve got just enough education to hang on to my good fortune. Enjoy what you have, not crave what you should have or want.

7. Listen to Your Significant Other
For those of us in relationships and Im talking about something real. One of those types where you really are in it for the long run. The main piece of advice on making any relationship work is this: pay attention to it and nurture it. That’s the priority. If you have a shrub and you want it to flourish, you have to water it and prune it and talk nice to it and pay attention to its clitoris, which is a horticultural term you can look up.

What “rules” do you have?
